Contractual/Contingent II
“Contractual” means that an employee is hired under a written contract for a position typically lasting one year, and the employee usually works a minimum of 20 hours per week. Appointments may be renewable. A leave package may be offered. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), contractual employees working 30 or more hours per week or 130 hours per month may be eligible for subsidized medical and prescription drug coverage through the State of Maryland’s health benefit program. Additional health benefits are available for participation under the direct pay plan. See Benefits for further information. Contingent II employees may be eligible for tuition remission benefits at their home institution. See the tuition remission webpage for criteria and policy.
Contingent I – Temporary
There are two categories of Contingent I.
- If & When Needed: The employee must work less than 20 hours per week. The initial contingent I agreement shall be for one year or less and it may be renewed by executing a new agreement for one year or less.
- Temporary: The employee will work 20 or more hours per week. The initial agreement is for a term of six months or less; it may be renewed one time by executing a new contract for six months or less.
Contingent I positions are paid for hours worked and do not receive leave or retirement benefits. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Contingent I employees working 30 or more hours per week or 130 hours per month may be eligible for subsidized medical and prescription drug coverage through the State of Maryland’s health benefit program. Additional health benefits are available for participation under the direct pay plan. See Benefits for further information.
