Nonexempt Position Tips

Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications listed on the job posting in order to be considered for the position.  For example, if a position requires four years of experience.  You will need to have a minimum of four years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) in order to be qualified.

Some positions allow for substitution of education for experience and vice versa.  If substitution is allowed, it will be noted in the job posting.

Complete the application by providing accurate, honest and relevant information.  Consider uploading a cover letter and resume with the application form.  This provides you the opportunity to address your skills and interests in the cover letter.  Remember this is your opportunity to make a good first impression.

Each position advertised requires an application to be submitted.  If you are interested in multiple positions, submit an application form for each position.

When Completing the UMBC Application Form be sure to:

  • List all positions with relevant job experience, including a detailed description of pertinent responsibilities.  It does not matter how many years ago the position was held.  If the experience is relevant, please list it so proper credit may be given.
  • Tailor your application for each position to which you apply. Make it easy to see how well you match the job.
  • Indicate the start and end date of each position using month/year format to ensure that maximum credit is given for your experience. For example:  5/2010 to 7/2012
  • Specify part-time or full-time for each position listed on the application.  If the position is part-time, the percentage of full-time should be calculated based on a 40 hour week and indicated on the application.  Example: a 24 hour per week position = 60% of full-time (24 divided by 40 = 60%)
  • Answer the question regarding the “number of employees supervised”.  This is critical if the position requires supervisory experience.
  • Provide a full and continuous history of your work experience.
  • List all licenses or certifications that you hold that are required for the position. You may upload copies of your licenses/certifications as part of the application.
  • Review the application for accuracy and typing/spelling errors prior to submission. Do not rely solely on computer spellchecks.
  • Complete all sections of the application form.
  • Include a cover letter and resume whenever possible.  These may be uploaded as part of the application. This makes a nice impression to the search committee.
  • Print out a copy of the job posting/ad to keep as a reference.  The postings are removed from the UMBC website after the closing date or when filled.

Application Review Process

Nonexempt applications are reviewed by Human Resources after the closing date indicated on the job posting.  Each application is reviewed by an Employment Specialist to determine if the minimum qualifications (i.e. education, experience, license, etc.) for the position are met.  Only applicants that meet the minimum position requirements as specified in the job posting will be eligible for further consideration.  Applicants that meet the minimum qualifications will be forwarded to the hiring department.

The hiring department will review the eligible applications and determine which individuals will be contacted for an interview.

If selected for an interview, the hiring department will contact you directly with specific details related to the interview (i.e., time, location, additional materials that you may need to bring to the interview, etc.).  Please check your email often.  See our section on Interview Tips for helpful information.

Due to the high volume of applications received, only those applicants for further consideration will be contacted by the hiring department.

If you do not hear something within thirty days after the closing date, you can assume you will not be called for an interview.

Apply for any positions that match your interests and qualifications.    It does not reflect negatively on you if you apply for multiple positions.

If you are interviewed for a position but not selected, please continue to apply for other positions.  Each hiring department operates independently.  The next position or interview may be a match!
